Why Is Collagen Good For You: Undeniable Facts

It seems everybody is talking about collagen or taking a collagen supplement lately. But you might be wondering why is collagen good for you? What does it do to your body?

Collagen is a protein contained in our body in a big amount. It makes up 80% of our skin structure. One of its functions is to provide structural support in connective tissue, muscle, and skin. Collagen is responsible for skin elasticity. It is like a glue that holds our bodies together.

As we grow older, collagen production depletes and the skin loses elasticity. Wrinkles appear. Hair gets thinner and, depending on the styling, often also more brittle. It is not shiny anymore and seems not to grow as the split ends break and fall off.

Collagen helps to address all of the above. In addition, there are many other benefits for your overall immunity, your joints, and gut but I just want to stress the benefits to skin and hair. Those are the reasons why I personally take collagen powder in long term.

5 reasons why is collagen good for you

So here are my top reasons with regards to your beauty:

  1. improves the appearance of your skin
As we age, our skin becomes less elastic, it is looser. You start noticing signs of aging like wrinkles or creases. As our natural collagen production decreases, we need to replenish it in our diet. That’s where collagen supplements come to the word. If you take collagen, your skin becomes more smooth and firm. It helps you look younger. I have personal experience with that. Having been taking collagen powder for several months, I’ve noticed my skin became smoother and more elastic.
Collagen helps the skin cells renew and repair themselves.
  2. helps your hair
Our hair is made up with keratin. Keratin is a protein just like collagen. To build keratin, our body needs several amino acids. And some of them can be found in collagen.
When we consume collagen and other proteins, our body breaks the proteins down to amino acids and uses the amino acids to build new proteins.
Some amino acids are essential i.e. can be obtained from our diet and some are non-essential i.e. the body can produce make them. Collagen contains three of the non-essential amino acids: glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline.
Collagen is rich in amino acids that our body needs to build keratin.
I also found some resources saying collagen may help slow greying. Whether it’s true or not, I don’t know. But the amount of grey hair has been the same for the last 15 years or so and that’s why I would be inclined to confirm it really is efficient.
  3. repairs your nails
Nails are composed largely of keratin that is also in skin and hair. Collagen may increase the strength of the nails and prevent brittleness as well as stimulate nails to grow longer.

  4. helps improve the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks
When skin loses its elasticity, cellulite becomes more visible. Collagen helps with that as well. With increased collagen intake your skin becomes smoother and more elastic which makes cellulite less obvious.

  5. impacts your joint mobility
Collagen allows your joints and tendons to move easily, to glide smoothly. As we age, collagen production is reduced and the joints become stiff causing pain. Collagen helps to support joint mobility.

These are the reasons I use collagen in my daily diet. I actually added it because I wanted to make my hair become thicker and grow faster. I experimented with a lot of external means to boost my hair growth but being a strong supporter of healthy diet affecting our look, I knew I had to add something else to improve my hair (and skin as well).

Where can you get collagen from?

You can increase your collagen intake by adding it to your daily diet in two ways:
1. food (meat, skin, and bones from chicken, beef, pork or fish so a bone broth is a great source of collagen)
2. supplements (collagen-containing products)

There is a huge variety of products that contain collagen in the market. My top choice is powdered collagen and I use it every evening mixed in a glass of water or lukewarm tea.

It is essential to add that production of collagen in our body is boosted by vitamin C as well. Vitamin C is contained in many fruits and vegetables so if you want to increase your vitamin C intake, you can either increase the number of fruits or vegetables such as oranges, strawberries, or peppers or buy some vitamin C supplements. I add vitamin C to my collagen drink – actually not adding it to the drink but take a little bit of it at the same time as my collagen drink.

How do you know, if you lack collagen?

Lack of collagen results in common signs of aging. When you see sagging skin that has lost its elasticity and wrinkles, as well as stiff joints, you can be sure the body is producing less collagen. With high collagen levels, the skin is soft, smooth, and firm.

If you experience such signs of lacking collagen, I highly recommend you to get yourself a high-quality collagen supplement and add bone broth to your daily diet. However, be patient when you do that! It takes several months to see significant results. Same as everything, long-term results can only be achieved with long-term habits.

Adding a collagen drink made of powdered collagen to your daily diet may bring some incredible results to your look! Your skin may get more elastic and healthy looking, your new grown hair may be stronger and your nail may stop breaking.

I’ve noticed my skin got more firm after taking collagen for a few months. My hair is stronger and my nails grow faster. And my hip joints and knees stopped hurting.

In my opinion, our look i.e. skin, hair, and nails reflect what we eat most of anything. It is good to be aware that if you care for your look and want to keep your skin look young as long as possible, have long and healthy hair, etc.

It is also important to take care of our skin and hair externally. You can find out more about hair care in the article how to make hair grow faster.

  2. Hello, I really want to first appreciate your effort in putting this great website together and writing this article. The benefits of collagen can not be emphasized enough and you have highlighted the important ones. But I have had wrinkle skin without effect of collagen. Is there another cause of that?

    1. Benny, skin is affected by many factors. One is collagen depletion with age as I mentioned in the article. Another one is long sunbathing or being exposed to the sun rays for long time. Then smoking, not enough hydration and other things. Skin is a mirror of how we live 🙂

  3. Hi, I think you make a lot of great points here in this awesome post. I did not know what collagen was. So this is a good learning experience for me. I have seen myself the benefits of proper nutrition and supplements for improving the appearance of your skin. I also agree that taking supplements is a good idea. I think that the person taking them will be happy with the results in that regard.  I have personally seen somebody who uses supplements for skin care. And I swear to you they looked 20 years younger.

    1. That’s absolutely true, Jake! I’ve been taking supplements for more than twenty years and I can see the results. It’s not visible day by day but in long term it makes a huge difference.

Now that I understand the problem by reading your article, I appreciate your research. And I can say with certainty that people like me who are facing this problem can also know what to do now. I want to use collagen powder as well as diet supplement but I have a question. Does this product have any side effects?
I would like to tell my friends to visit this web site so that everyone would benefit.

    1. Hello Shanta, I am glad I could provide you with some useful information. As to the side effects of collagen supplements, it is like with everything else. You shouldn’t overuse it. The recommended dose is always written on the product. I use 3300 mg of hydrolyzed marine collagen mixed with water or lukewarm tea a day.

  7. Thank you very much for sharing this fantastic news. I had no idea collagen was to be found in food as well. I thought just in cremes to apply to your skin.
This is awesome news. Every article I read on this website has the potential to change something in my everyday life. I will have to prepare me a collagen drink sometimes. A few days ago I was approached by a sales person, he said “you have wonderful skin, but you do not take care of the skin around your eyes, use this and that….” I didn’t like him. It was 5 am in an airport and I hadn’t slept…..so the guy was way out of line. But he had a point. My general skin is much better than around the eyes. Would you have any advice for that?
Thank you so much in advance

    1. Hello Janie, the skin around the eyes is thiner and there is less fat under the top layer of the skin so it ages quickly and we have to take care of it very well. I use a rejuvenation serum after cleaning my skin in the evening and then apply cream. I’m going to write a review of serums for aging skin soon. There are some great anti-aging ingredients I want to inform you of. A lot of stuff that can be useful to look at when you buy your beauty weaponry!

  8. Hello, Lenka!

Now, on to the article! I have never thought about my skin in such a way. In fact, I always thought that when I saw a wrinkle, it would be time to better learn about my skin. Well, there are quite a bit more than a couple of wrinkles now, and it’s time I start looking into keeping my skin the way it is.

When I think of collagen products, I’ve only ever thought of it in beauty creams. However, you discuss taking it via powder form and suggesting foods that are rich in natural collagen. Thank you for teaching me something new!

I have a feeling you will be sharing more of your great knowledge with us and beauty secrets! I’ll be a frequent reader, that’s for sure! Keep the information coming!

    1. I am very happy to share the knowledge I gathered over years with you and others, Heidi! It is something I have always been interested in. I know what vitamins are contained in a particular fruit or vegetables and such things most people would probably consider crazy to be interested in.
It is great that you found some new information for yourself that can help you keep your skin look young for a long time. Collagen production decreases with age but we can do something about it.
Stay tuned, I will be coming up with some other secrets. They are not really secrets but all together all this information can help you keep shining!

  9. I’ve read and heard about collagen a lot recently and I was wondering what was so special about it. Now I understand it more. I would like to get a collagen supplement, but there are so many on the market, in various forms like powder, shots, capsules, etc. Which one would you recommend? Is there any difference in the absorption of these different forms?

  10. Hello Lenka,
there’s a lot of useful information in this article and it’s obvious that collagen is very important for the human body. Knowing of collagen benefits for the skin, hair and joints, it seems everyone should consider consuming it. Aren’t there any factors that could hinder collagen consumption? Is it safe for seniors to consume collagen from bones and skin of poultry etc.?
