7 Foods That Help Burn Fat While You Sleep

When you are on a diet, you usually look for foods that have low calories count, but did you know that there are foods can actually help burn fat?

Foods That Help Burn Fat While You Sleep

You might be asking how it is possible to eat something and burn fat. Well, some foods have a thermogenic effect on the body which helps with fat oxidation. If you eat fat-burning foods, you can boost your metabolism which makes you more energetic and lose weight faster.

So it is not like you just eat something before bed and it makes you slim. These foods increase the speed your body works so you burn more calories at any time no matter what you are doing so even during sleep.

How can you achieve that? You need to make your body work more while it’s resting. There are many ways to boost your metabolism while you sleep: having a higher muscle mass, keeping the temperature in your bedroom low so your body has to work more to keep its temperature and eating high protein, low-calorie foods before going to sleep.

Benefits Of Adding Fat-Burning Foods To Your Diet

Slim waist. There are foods that help burn fat while you sleep

All the foods that help burn fat increasing your metabolism have high nutritional value as they are full of vitamins and other nutrients which may improve your health.

Adding fat-burning foods to your diet can boost your immunity and help keep you healthy. Compared to supplements or surgical methods, there are no side effects or risks (if you are not allergic to any of them) and they don’t cost a lot of money.

Now let’s have a look at what particular foods belong to this category.

FOODS THAT WILL HELP YOU BURN FAT

Avocados

Avocados are high in fat and low in carbs so you can add them to your meal plan and eat them any time you want. They are also rich in fiber and contain many valuable nutrients that are good for you.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits also help increase your metabolism which makes your body burn fat faster. This is a feature of all citrus fruits but the best one of them regarding weight loss is grapefruit.

Grapefruit also avoid craving for sweet foods as it regulates blood sugar levels.

Eggs

It is a well-known fact that eggs are among the healthiest foods ever. Eggs are an excellent source of protein which helps burn our body fats most efficiently. As we discussed eggs being an excellent source of protein; protein helps to burn fats quickly as compared to others. Eggs not only help burn fats but also help build muscles.

Almonds

almonds are very healthy

Almonds, same as eggs are almost a miracle when it comes to our health and weight loss. According to a study eating just 1.5 oz of almonds a day can lead to a reduction of bad cholesterol levels and weight loss. Impressive, isn’t it?

So having a handful of almonds in the late evening or before you go to bed can help you burn fat.

Fatty Fish

Salmon, herring, sardines. These are just examples of oily fish that are great for you any time during the day or night. They contain omega-3 fatty acids which have been shown not only to promote fat loss but also support brain function, youthful skin and hair and healthy heart.

Salmon is one of the best fat-burning foods ever. If you have it with some vegetables, you can’t go wrong.

Fish is also rich in protein, which helps you feel full but it’s not heavy on stomach. Protein-rich foods boost your metabolic rate and there is usually lack of them in our diet.

Tomatoestomatoes are low-carb vegetables rich in antioxidants

Tomatoes are low-carb vegetables that are rich in antioxidants. They also control the function of leptin, which is a hormone found in fat cells that regulates the amount of fat stored in the body. It was found that the effects of leptin are exactly the opposite to the effects of ghrelin, another hormone known as the hunger hormone. Leptin sends signals of saturation to your brain so you don’t overeat. That’s why tomatoes are so beneficial for us.

Greek Yogurt

Full-fat yogurt is packed with protein and healthy fats as well as probiotics. It is one of the best late night snacks you can have when you feel like eating something small and not heavy on your stomach.

FAT-BURNING SPICES

There is a group of spices that increase the metabolism and have many other benefits as well.

garlic increases metabolismCHILLI PEPPERS

Chilli can increase your metabolic rate and help you burn calories. Chilli contains capsaicin which helps in cutting down fat by increasing metabolism. That’s why spicy meals are actually good for you.

GARLIC

Garlic increases metabolism, contains antioxidants and helps burning calories. However, some people (including me) may have problem eating garlic late evening or at night. Adding a few cloves of garlic in your lunch can help you burning more calories, let alone the anti-parasitic effects on your digestion.

JALAPEŇOS

Same as chilli peppers, jalapeňos can boost your metabolism and burn the calories faster, but be careful with the amount. If you eat too much of them, you can get digestion problems.

CINNAMON

Cinnamon is very poweful in boosting up the metabolism even though it is by far not as strong as chilli, garlic or jalapeňos. , cutting down cholesterol level, and regulates blood sugar levels.

GINGER

Ginger boosts up body’s metabolism, suppresses appetite and contains antioxidants. There are many other benefits of ginger but just the few named above should be sufficient to add it to your diet as often as you can.

Other factors that contribute to weight loss at night

1. Relaxing Before Sleeprelaxing and mediation before bed can stop cravings for food

Breathing and meditation helps make you calm and focus on the needs of your body so you might find out you actually don’t need any food at might. It won’t harm you to have no food, have a good night sleep and let the stomach wait for breakfast.

2. Limiting Exposure To Light

Exposure to light at night does not only interrupt your sleep. It also may result in weight gain. A study with 100,000 women aged 16 or more in the UK found a relation between obesity and exposure to light at night. So sleeping in a dark room and not turning light on during the night makes sense!

3. Watching Less TV

Another study found out that prolonged TV viewing was associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and early death. It is uncertain why exactly does watching TV affect us in such a bad way but it is probably due to the fact we don’t burn the calories while we sitting for a long time. Add all the adverts that “inspire” you to have a bag of chips or some ice cream to it and you know why.

To sum it up, the best foods that help burn fat while you sleep are high-protein foods such as almonds, fish, chicken, eggs or greek yoghurt. If you add a few pieces of vegetables to it, you can’t get wrong.

A protein shake or a glass of milk with collagen peptides is a great option too as it helps make rejuvenate your skin, in addition to the weight loss benefits.

  1. Love this article! This is a great list of healthy foods. I eat a keto diet, and these all happen to line up perfectly with my way of eating.

I’ve been reading a lot lately about intermittent fasting – wondered if you feel like that’s a good thing to try? Thanks for your input!

    1. Katie, that’s perfect, I didn’t get to trying a keto diet yet but I’ve been on a low-carb diet all of my life and I feel great with that.
Intermittent fasting is supposed to be very beneficial in many aspects. In that regard, I believe that if we eat less frequently we don’t “wear off” our digestion system so much and it keeps us younger looking, among many other things. After all, when you see all the people who are 90 or 100 years old, none of them is overweight, they are all slim. Their diet is usually modest, they don’t overeat. Who knows if they also don’t do some intermittent fasting not being aware of that? 🙂

  2. This is valuable information. Thanks very much for sharing it. I love eggs and almonds, so I guess I need to increase their consumption to help me with my new diet. Do I need to consume them right before sleep? Also another question, does it matter if I consume avocado or citrus in juice form (the home-made one)? Thanks for your answer

    1. Alblue, as to the nutrients contained in the fruits, it is the same but if you make a juice and remove the fibre, it is less filling and you might still feel hungry (if you were hungry before).
You don’t need to eat these foods right before sleep, any time during the day is good as well. In general, if you eat healthy foods and focus on more protein, your body will adjust to it, your metabolism increases and you will burn more fat any time. That’s actually the principle of it all. These foods are not a magic pill, they just help with metabolism rate and thermogenesis. I hope it helped.

  3. This article is a perfect subject for me as I am looking for foods that will help me burn fat while I sleep. The 7 that you have highlighted all are ones that I like so I will try them out to see how they work. I will alternate to see which work the best and stick with the most effective ones.

Your suggestions on the spices to use are also helpful and these are ones that I use in my cooking now. I will increase the amounts I use (I like them anyway so that is no problem). Lastly, your suggestions on changing my habits are also useful and I will watch what I am doing. I look forward to seeing how these excellent tips will work. Thanks much!

    1. Dave, that’s great that you like the foods I pointed at in my article. I also like them all but eggs and avocados most of all. Also cinnamon and chilli peppers. What I like about all these foods and spices is the fact that they are healthy anyway, even if they didn’t burn fat. So you can’t go wrong 🙂
Let me know how these foods, spices and additional tips work for you!

  4. Hi Lenka  thank you for this very interesting post. I love avocados and tend to only eat them during the day but never thought of eating them as a snack before bed and that it would help me burn fat at night. I’m going to try doing that and will get back to you and tell you if it has help me. I don’t want to lose weight really but rather not to have some sugary stuff before bed. I knew nuts were a good option and I tend to eat them for breakfast with my yogurt or eat them also before bed and I have noticed that they help me sleep better.

    1. That’s great, Amanee, nuts are perfect in many more aspects than just sleep and fat burning. They are also food for our brain and overall health.
It’s good that you are trying to avoid sugary snacks, not only they affect our weight but also damage our skin. Sugar is one of the age accelerators so if we want to keep young looking skin, we need to avoid these age accelerators as I wrote in another article 5 secrets tips how to stop aging naturally.
Have a nice day and let me know how the avocados worked for you!

  5. Great article, and very helpful. Most of the time I’m on a diet and I really do search for food that has very low-calorie count and try to limit my daily calorie intake. I never knew there are foods that can burn fats, but thanks to your article I now know what to choose without being afraid that I might gain weight. I love the fact that the foods you mention burn fat while you’re sleeping, that’s absolutely amazing. Thank you for sharing.
