Does aloe vera get rid of acne scars

Does Aloe Vera Get Rid Of Acne Scars?

We all want to have beautiful flawless skin but not everyone is so blessed to have it without any effort. Acne is one of the most common skin issues both in teenagers and adults. You might have managed it but what about the scars, dark spots, and reddish complexion as a result of previous acne problems?

Being a great remedy for all sorts of skin issues like sunburns, bites, cut wounds, etc. as well as scars, aloe vera also helps to get rid of acne scars.

It doesn’t rid you of the scars overnight or in a week. You have to be patient and persistent and apply it every day, best before going to bed and might notice significant results in a month.

What’s So Special About Aloe Vera

The healing effects of aloe vera are mentioned in my article about toasted skin syndrome and some other ones. Aloe is a miraculous plant. It soothes your tissues both from the outside and from the inside. That’s why it is often used as an internal digestion remedy.

Aloe vera contains 200 active compounds: vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugars, lignin, saponins, salicylic acids, and amino acids.

No wonder this amazing plant was used by ancient Egyptians as the pursuit of their physical beauty.

How It Works So Effectively As Sunburn And Skin Repair

You might have heard of the anesthetic Lidocaine. Did you know it is naturally present in aloe vera? That means it’s effective relief for pain and burning. Some unprocessed glycoproteins and polysaccharides repair damaged skin cells while reducing inflammation.

Amazing Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Aloe Vera

The compound in aloe vera that’s responsible for the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative activity is called aloin. A study of the effects of aloin was performed in 2018 and describes the effects of aloin on cells in detail.

Aloe vera increases collagen production when applied topically or even taken orally. This cell-growth stimulating property can help boost collagen production in your skin. So it is not only good for getting rid of your actual skin problems but also taking care of your skin for the future.

Good For Pimples But Also For Dark Spots

Another amazing improvement you can expect from aloe vera is the effect on your dark spots. It’s usually an issue occurring in elderly people but one of my friends used to have big dark spots on her face every summer.

If it’s only small spots, they may look cute but huge coin-size spots all over your face aren’t necessarily anything you’d be happy to see in the mirror.

You can address this trouble with Aloe Vera as well.

How is it possible? Aloin, the compound contained in aloe vera is a natural depigmenting compound. It lightens the skin and treats hyperpigmentation with great results.

Recommended use: Apply aloe vera gel on your pigmented areas before you go to bed and leave it to work overnight.

How To Use Aloe Vera To Get Rid Of Acne Scars

Let’s get back to our subject of how to get rid of acne scars using aloe vera.

Here’s the recommended way how to use Aloe on acne scars

  1. Clean your face and remove all makeup and dirt
  2. Use pure aloe vera gel and leave it overnight.
  3. Apply aloe vera gel in the morning, after you wash your face with water

Apply a soft peeling on your face once a week to remove the dead cells and allow the aloe vera to work directly on the scars.

What Can Aloe Vera Be Combined With

Other Inflammatory Agents

You can use aloe vera gel in conjunction with other anti-inflammatory ingredients like turmeric, chamomile, or colloidal oatmeal. I haven’t tried it with anything else than jojoba oil and hemp seed oil though.

Aloe vera can also be combined with tretinoin that has been prescribed for acne. A study shows that the topical use of tretinoin combined with aloe vera works better than tretinoin on its own.

Is It Safe To Use Aloe Vera?

Aloe vera is a well-known natural remedy and has been used for centuries. It is absolutely safe to use it regularly not only on your face but also on hair. Oral intake helps for digestion issues. In general, this is a point to observe: If something is good for oral intake, it is safe for topical use as well. Think of honey, lemon, and various herbs.

How Long Does it Take for Aloe Vera to Remove Acne Scars?

Just like with everything in life, from weight loss to learning a new language, to building a business, nothing happens in one day.

A consistent long-term procedure is necessary to obtain the results you want to get.

In the case of the aloe vera application, you should see visible results in a month. Your skin will be lighter, more supple and the scars should be less pronounced.

If you want immediate results, chemical peels applied by skincare specialists are very effective but you have to be very careful with sun exposure after the application. Your face will be very sensitive and appear red after chemical peeling.

Can Aloe Vera Remove Pimples?

Aloe vera has strong anti-bacterial properties so it helps control and reduces acne-causing bacteria on the skin. It does take some time though, healing doesn’t happen overnight. You have to apply aloe vera leaf juice or an aloe vera gel twice a day for about a month.

Side Effects, Colorants, And Other Safety Issues

Is Aloe Vera Gel Clear or Green?

Definitely not green! If you see an aloe vera gel that’s green, it is because there is some added colorant in it. I’d recommend you to go for pure colorless gels only.

Is Xanthan Bad For Your Skin?

Some aloe vera gels (and other skincare products) contain xanthan gum. It is not known to have any toxic or harmful side effects, can be appropriate for use in natural and organic skincare, and is thought to have some hydrating benefits for the skin.

Nevertheless, just like almost everything, it can be irritating for some people. That’s why some producers, like Seven Minerals, make aloe vera gels without xanthan.

Are There Any Side Effects of Topical Aloe Vera Use?

There are not any side effects of regular or occasional use of aloe vera. However, it can be irritating for some people so test your sensitivity applying a small amount in a discreet location. If you experience redness or itching, remove all aloe vera gel carefully and stop using it.

If you have sensitive skin and are afraid of a negative reaction, reach for as pure aloe vera product as possible. All the three products recommended below are pure, organic and should be safe for sensitive skin.

Which Aloe Vera Gel To Choose

You should either use natural pulp from an aloe vera plant if you have one at home or get an organic 100% pure aloe vera gel.

Your aloe vera gel should come in organic quality, 100% pure, cold-pressed, in a dark bottle.

  1. I used to do an aloe vera mask before. I remember the sensation that it was very tingling. I also made a drink out of aloe vera since it is so good for you. That is amazing that Aloe Vera even can get rid of acne scars, I had no idea! I have a lot of sunspots as well, this is so exciting! I am going to give the majestic aloe a try.

    1. That’s a good idea, Nuttanee, aloe also brightens the skin, makes it tighter and as I pointed out in the article, it works on dark spots as well. However, it really takes time and patience. Let me know how it worked!

    1. I’m glad you found the information helpful, Rosalia. I think there are still not enough people who would know about the amazing effects of this powerful plant on our skin (and digestion, if consumed).

  3. Hi, Lenka an excellent article, I love all-natural products. I am a researcher on natural remedies for my own benefits and that of my family. I love to come across people that have the same passion, we learn so much from each other.

Over the years I have made many friends doing my own research. We can never learn too much, we learn from the time we are born till the time we die. I am still amazed at how I get new information.

I know the benefits of aloe vera and how to use it. The most beneficial is the plant itself and so easy to grow in your own home.

Not all of us are equal or have the time so there are others that provide easy to use formulas that we can use in our homes and how to use them safely or products that are on the market and what to look for. You have provided all that information in this article.

This is what I look for when researching.
I look forward to reading more of what you have to offer. Thanks Always A Better Way

    1. Hi Linda, thank you very much for your words of appreciation. I couldn’t live without learning new things, new skills, it’s of my natural traits and it makes me happy to research and discover. Just like you.

      Always a better way.

  4. Good afternoon Lenka,

My personal experience with Aloe Vera is very positive, and I can recommend using it. I had a bad fall with a gaping wound some years ago. The only thing I used was Aloe Vera gel. After 1 month the wound had become a flat and pink scar which faded away after some years.

I have done a 9 day fast and one thing I was drinking was Aloe Vera, it tastes quite ok, and is super healthy for your inside.

Thank you for this good and informative article, I bet it will be helpful to a lot of your readers.

    Regards, Taetske

    1. Hello Taetske, nice to hear that your wound healed so quickly thanks to aloe vera. It never stops amazing me how powerful some plants and herbs are and it’s a shame majority of people doesn’t know about them.
I grew up in a city and the way to treat everything health issue was to go to the doctor or to pharmacy. Now I live in the country in a house that was originally my grandma’s house and appreciate the beauty of the nature. When I get a cold, I just stay in bed and use home remedies. I can’t imagine living in a city anymore. Although we don’t have a big garden, I still can have some herbs there and I pick some on my walks with our dog. I especially love dandelions in spring.
Thank you for taking time to read and comment, greatly appreciated.

  5. Very cool post! After I turned 40 a few years ago, I started to pay more attention to my skin. I don’t really have issues with “pimples” per se, although they do flare up from time to time depending on my diet. I have noticed a few brown/dark spots on my face, more than before. You recommend Aloe Vera Gels having awesome effects on the skin. I’ll need to look into it a bit more and see how they can help with my skin color and skin tone. Thx so much!

    1. I believe an aloe vera gel can really improve your skin tone and color as well. Let me know how it works when you try it out!

  6. Hi Lenka! I always believed aloe vera is a very useful plant. I have a big one at home and I use it for many things like burns wounds and others. However, I did not know it helps with acne scars. I have tried some aloe vera products from a friend of mine who sells Forever Living products based on aloe vera. The aloe vera juice is good. I  have not tried the products you show here, but I think the Majestic Aloe gel looks quite promising. I learned something new about it from your article, and I will definitely try aloe vera on my acne scars and pigment spots.

  7. Wow! You’ve given me some new information about my old friend, Aloe Vera. My Mom introduced me to this incredible plant many years ago. She had many near her front door so they could be easily accessed whenever needed. When she gifted some to me for our home, I felt quite honored!

While I like having the plants available whenever I need, I also like to have a container of gel handy for when we are away from home. So we keep a couple of containers for such times.

However, I did not know about the acne and skin conditions that can be helped with aloe. I know what will be found in the Christmas stockings of my young adult children this year! Thanks for the information!

    1. I’m very glad I could help, Diane! Aloe Vera is indeed a powerful plant. I use it for all kinds of skin issues.
