Best Collagen Peptides For Beautiful Skin and Hair

Are you looking for the best collagen supplement to promote your hair growth, skin elasticity, and flexibility of your joints? In this article, you will find a list of the best collagen peptides in 2020 based on my research and preferences as well as customer reviews.

How To Choose The Best Collagen Peptides Product

A good quality collagen supplement should be produced by a reliable company and contain a full and transparent list of its ingredients. There will be hydrolyzed collagen, which is powdered collagen that comes from the bones and cartilage of fish, cows, pigs or chickens. This form of collagen is known as hydrolyzed collagen or collagen peptides.

The reason why it is utilized in collagen supplements is that it has enhanced bioavailability. Vitamin C or hyaluronic acid may be included in some products as well.

Vitamin C is essential in collagen synthesis. Hyaluronic acid helps support the binding of collagen to elastin, which is the complementary compound that supports the flexibility of your soft tissues.

The choice of collagen supplements is wide, with different formulations and different prices. The most important thing when choosing the right product for you is to find the most effective product of a reliable company for a price you are happy to pay.

You also want to find a product that is as pure as possible and does not include filler ingredients, artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

Why Is Collagen So Important

You can read about it in more detail in the article Why Is Collagen Good For You. To say just the basics, our skin, bones, hair and nails are made of collagen and collagen production decreases with age. Drastic signs can be seen on the skin as a result of the loss of collagen: the skin becomes saggy and wrinkles appear. So if you wish to have young-looking skin and shiny hair, collagen supplement is a must together with healthy eating.

There are other factors that contribute to lower collagen amount in the body: sun rays, sugar consumption, smoking. That’s why it is so important to take collagen supplements to boost your collagen levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any difference between collagen powder, tablets, or liquid?

As to the efficiency, there are no studies that would prove any of the form is better than the other. Powders are believed to be the best way of collagen intake due to its versatility and lack of taste. You can add it to any food and drink. If you go for tablets, you will have to take more of them due to the amount of collagen you’ll need.

What types of collagen are there and how to choose the right one?

There are at least 16 types of collagen, but 80 – 90 percent of the collagen in the body consists of types I, II, and III:

  • Type I collagen is considered to be the key building block of your skin which makes up 80% of the dermis layer of the skin. Type I is stronger than steel by weight and with its triple-helix design gives skin its structure, firmness and also supports healthy, stronger hair and nails. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the collagen treatment you wish to get for your skin should contain mainly Type I.
  • The best collagen supplements for joints contain Type II, which makes up 50% of cartilage protein. As you grow old and your levels drop, the cartilage in your movable joints is weakened and stops regenerating. Those who play sports or exercise vigorously may suffer from joint problems even earlier in life. Supplements containing Type II collagen are commonly used to treat aging joints and relieve the pain associated with arthritis.
  • Type III collagen plays an important role in the health of the skin, hair, and nails. It is the second most abundant collagen in human tissue and is more pliable than Type III. Babies have a lot of Type III, which is why their skin is so soft and plump. As you age, Type III is gradually replaced by Type I.

When to take collagen?

When you aim for smoothing your complexion from the inside, there are two main schools of thought: Some people claim it is best to have your liquid collagen drink or supplement pill in the morning when your stomach is empty (claiming that stomach acid will break down the collagen, making it ineffective).

Others believe you should take it at night because your skin works its rejuvenating magic (which includes collagen production) while you sleep.

I take my collagen drink late evening or before bedtime and I can see results on my skin and hair. That’s why I am inclined to say you should consume your drink with collagen peptides late evening or before bedtime to boost your beauty at night, together with your skincare routine.

How much collagen should you take per day?

The answer depends on your goals. For a glowing complexion, strengthening joints and bone, or reducing cellulite, one 11-gram scoop a day will do. For building muscle, 1 1/2 scoops (or 15-grams) per day is a good start.

A good general rule is to aim to consume about as many grams of protein as your weight in pounds.” And incorporated into this mix would be the quantity of collagen that you are consuming as well. On a more general level, Dr. Whitney Bowe, a renowned dermatologist, says the magic number is two scoops of collagen powder daily.

Are skin creams containing collagen not sufficient?

There is an answer to this question in a New York Times article from 2019/11/09 by Dr. Bowe: because collagen is produced in the deeper level of the skin, called the dermis (which is lower than the epidermis), it is very hard for topical collagen to actually make it there.

For women of all age categories who care about their skin health as well as overall fitness, consuming collagen peptides is a must.

Can you get enough collagen from food?

If we consumed bones and skin of chicken, cattle or fish being the richest sources we wouldn’t have to worry so much about our collagen intake but most people don’t eat those parts. Bone broth is a recommended collagen-rich option and if you consume it every day, you will get some collagen but as we lose it with aging, it still won’t be enough.

How much collagen is contained in bone broth?

ConsumerLab says that the amount of collagen ranges from 2.5 grams to 15 grams, with most studies using 10 to 15 grams.

Are there any negative side effects to taking collagen?

According to healthline.com there are currently not many known risks to taking collagen supplements. However, some supplements are made from common food allergens, such as fish, shellfish, and eggs. Collagen supplements may lead to side effects such as a bad taste in the mouth, heartburn, and fullness.

If you are taking the recommended dose, there are no documented downsides of taking collagen peptides.

How should you consume your collagen peptides powder?

You can add your collagen powder to any drink of your choice i.e. cold drink or hot drinks. Another option is to enrich your favorite smoothies with it. Most of the collagen peptides are tasteless and odorless so they do not affect the final taste.

  1. I am very happy to have found your site, I have been looking for stuff like this… I really need to find the best solutions out there and as you know there is no easy way to find the best products, I feel you have gone through this very good and have a healthy opinion and a good point in every product you have in this article, I think I will go for the best ranked… why not?

    1. Thank you for your comment, Andreas. All of those products are really high quality ones but there is only one number 1 🙂 I’ll be happy if you share your experience with Collagen Peptides with us.
There is usually much more than one expects. People who get Collagen to improve their skin or hair experience pain relief in their knees or hip joints, improved sleep and other things. Collagen often works wonders.

  2. Collagen’s role in our bodies cannot be overemphasized in that it is responsible for that gleeful, youthful look which I’m sure we all cherish. Sadly, the older we get, the less of it our bodies produce which makes supplements a good choice to keep it flowing. Good of you to have researched the best of them and I think the post workout & recovery Collagen Peptides Powder is the one I’ll be checking out. Thanks

    1. Thank you Rhain for taking time to comment! Good choice, the Post Workout & Recovery Collagen Peptides Powder is one of the most recommended ones for females! I know the package should not play a role in our decision making but I like the pink dose as well. 🙂
You are right, the role of collagen can never be overemphasized and especially for us girl it is absolutely essential.

  3. Your last paragraphs made me laugh.  You list the feeling of fullness as a side effect of having collagen.  Wouldn’t that be great for weight loss then?  So, basically, since my dog gets all of the skin and bones from my cooking, no wonder his coat looks so great!  Frankly, if collagen can even give me fewer gray hairs, I’m all for it!  I’m still going to be making my own bone broth, though, as well as taking the supplement.  It’s just too yummy to give up!

    1. You are right, it would be great for weight loss! I haven’t experienced the feeling of fullness with collagen as I take it in the evening, putting it into my tea but I think it works similar as protein powder drinks and my morning protein shake makes me full enough for 3 to 4 hours!
My dog also gets bones from my cooking but the skin is something I enjoy 🙂
Thanks for taking time to comment!

  7. Amazing information thanks a lot. I always desire to purchase hair and skin product for my wife now with this article I am confident that I can not just purchases product but I have the knowledge to get the best of the best promoting hair growth is one of the thing that I always do so this is definitely helpful. I also think you have answered all the important questions about collagen. Thanks a lot.

    1. I am sure your wife will be very happy with any of the products I recommend in my article. They are high quality collagen peptides that really promote beautiful skin and hair growth. That’s my experience.
Let me know your wife’ s results! 🙂

  8. This is a beautiful site, I am pleased I have found it to share with my partner who has a terrible habit of snacking on “something sweet”, typically biscuits or chocolate just before bed.  I have also learnt. It will help with my weight loss programme.  Thank you.

The advice you offer will help her and so I have passed details to her. She is exactly how you have described; she is almost obsessive in watching carefully what she eats during the day and then, “bang”; “give me something sweet to eat!”. The list of “milk, cheese, beef, pork or poultry, fish or seafood, eggs, protein drink and protein bar” is handy.  I have copied that as a reminder and bookmarked your useful page.

The idea of eating nuts or eggs at night is a great one.  But if you eat eggs at night, what about in the morning?  Doesn´t that mean you are heading for a high cholesterol intake in 24 hours.  What would you recommend for breakfast after a snack of eggs at night?

    1. Hello Trevor, I am glad you asked this question. As to cholesterol, it is different than what we used to be told in the past that eggs are bad regarding cholesterol. Not at all, they are one of the best foods you can have. They do contain fat and cholesterol but the good one and a few years ago I have seen a test with a group of people who had to consume eggs every day, I can’t remember how many but I am sure it was more than five eggs a day and they measured their cholesterol levels. It didn’t increase after eggs at all.

The protein in eggs is the best absorbable protein for human body. It is the carbs that make us fat and make all the mess 🙂 If you have let’s say 3 eggs with vegetables, you will feel satiated and and you don’t need to worry about your cholesterol level. But as I said, have just the eggs without any carbs so no bread or anything like that.

The same with for nuts. Many people think that nuts are too fatty and shouldn’t be eaten in the evening or at night. But if you have just a handful of nuts (not in chocolate or fried or anything, of course), it is not a problem at all. They are actually great for your brain, support good night sleep etc.

So if your wife wants to keep a nice figure, she can have nuts or eggs for dinner and she won’t have cravings or sweet tooth so much because proteins helps with that.

  9. Many thanks for the nice article about collagen peptides. They are really helpful. I know this because I have used two of the products you are writing about. I am still using them. I have talked with one of my friends who encouraged me to use these products. I have used Vital Proteins Hydrolyzed Collagen Powder and Ancient Nutrition Multi Collagen Protein.

Thank you again for giving me opportunity to tell my experience with this topic. I hope other readers can get a lot of knowledge about it.

    1. That’s great that you have good experience with collagen peptides too, Tashibaarzu. I am happy you are confirming my experience and my research. I think every woman should know about these collagen peptides as they help us keep youthful skin and shiny long hair.

  10. I lost all of my hair a few years back from bluntly stopping the use of steroids which I had taken for a very long time. I just got tired of the effect they had on me and what they did to my body. Little did I know, stopping them abruptly would cause my hair loss. So I began using collagen peptides and still do to this day. So I was curious to see what your number 1 recommendation was. And yep, that is what I have been using for a couple of years now. It works wonders for the hair, skin, and nails. The benefits have been a godsend for me.
